Greeting Card
This year SOICS began its first greeting card project. The project was divided into 2 categories.
The first one was in partnership with 5 elementary schools in SD 67 where children were asked to participate in the “Winter Celebration” colouring project. Our young participants were asked to draw and colour their idea of celebrating winter. To further spread our Holiday Cheers, we divided the second part of the project to include our youth volunteers.
Water Colour Demo
This watercolour practice workshop was held in Dec 2014, under Nel Witteman’s guidance. Nel has a wealth of knowledge, creativity and skills to share, along with her gift of awakening the creative spirit in her students. She began the workshop by demonstrating some of her artwork. Nel has a subtle watercolour style and paints the exquisite landscapes of the beautiful Okanagan valley. She then moved on to giving tips and techniques in developing water colouring skills. She also shared with the participant youth on how mistakes could enhance their paintings and how they could turn them into happy accidents. Materials were supplied to student who enjoyed the workshop with a palette of colour that Nel uses.
Nel has been a director of the Okanagan School of the Arts and is a great promoter and supporter of creativity in this region. Thank You Nel for visiting SOICS and delivering the workshop.
Design a T-shirt Contest
Penticton Library has invited teenagers (aged 13-18) to submit an original design by 5 pm on Wednesday January 21st 2015 to help celebrate Freedom to Read Week. Michelle Camelford, the Teen representative from Penticton Library, came to SOICS to explain the contest to eligible clients. They were then given the chance to begin their T-shirt designs and Michelle will be coming to SOICS to collect their entries on the 21st January 2015.
While the workshop was catered to only teenagers, information on the following contests was also given to participants to educate them on other opportunities available. For example,

Nominations have to be submitted by January 19th and the awards will be presented on February 25th 2015 at the Shatford Centre. For further information, please click here.
