Using office plants, a group of Plant Care Specialists in the Oliver office created a program that is twofold in its purpose. First, a group of clients are selected to learn about caring for houseplants by repotting the young shoots. Group members search for free, used pots and soil is purchased. When they are ready, young plants are repotted and handed out to clients. Clients are told about the plants and given instruction on how to care for them. This innovative program is inexpensive and provides a tangible connection between clients and the agency. It’s a way for us to share a little bit of our office with the people who come and see us. It also gives staff an opportunity for conversation when they see the clients again, further connecting the newcomer to their new society. These small steps add up to significant gains in integration over time.
