Community Connections
Through our community connections services, we match clients and mentors based on criteria such as similar interests, age, professional background, and occupation. Although the majority of the matches are catered to improve language skills, these matches also provide an avenue for the participants to build connections. Mentors support and encourage mentees in their goals, connect them to established Canadians, expose them to different perspectives, and share information on:
Mentors complete an application package, a criminal record check and provide two references. We provide mentor training to individuals who are able, willing and keen to assist immigrants in connecting them with resources that help support their integration into the South Okanagan-Similkameen region. The training session also introduces the mentors to our policies, cultural sensitivity elements, and confidentiality protocols. Upon completion of all formalities, mentors are contacted to discuss position placement, availability and options.
Our 1-on-1 English or French Mentorship Program is designed to support newcomers and immigrants as they build confidence and fluency in English. You’ll be paired with a dedicated mentor who tailors each session to your goals—whether that’s everyday conversation, workplace communication, or navigating life in your new community.
Through personalized lessons, real-life practice, and ongoing encouragement, you’ll learn at your own pace in a welcoming, judgment-free environment. This program is more than language learning—it’s about connection, confidence, and feeling empowered to thrive in your new home.
Make a meaningful difference by supporting newcomer immigrants as they explore career pathways in their new country. Our 1-on-1 Career Exploration Mentorship Program pairs volunteers with newcomers seeking guidance on career options, workplace culture, and professional growth.
As a mentor, you’ll share your experience, offer encouragement, and help mentees build confidence as they navigate their career journey. No prior mentoring experience is required—just a willingness to listen, share insights, and support someone taking their next steps.
Join us and help newcomers turn their skills and aspirations into informed career choices.
As a Homework Club Virtual Tutor, you will mentor younger students (ages 5–13) by supporting them with their English (reading and writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies homework. Through weekly online sessions, you’ll help build students’ confidence, strengthen their academic skills, and encourage positive learning habits in a supportive environment.
This is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours, give back to your community, and contribute to the development of children and youth. You’ll also build valuable soft skills such as communication, leadership, and patience, while gaining hands-on experience using online tools like Zoom—all in just one hour per week, online.
The Pre-Arrival Mentorship Program connects local professionals with newcomer professionals before they arrive in the community. As a mentor, you’ll support newcomers by sharing insights about employment, workplace culture, and life in the South Okanagan–Similkameen.
The program helps newcomers prepare for meaningful employment while allowing you to expand your professional network, strengthen your coaching skills, and give back in a meaningful way. Mentorship takes place online for about one hour per week over eight weeks, with a flexible schedule.
